What Is My Tarot Birth Card?

Your tarot birth card is the Major Arcana card that corresponds to the date you were born. The method, popularised by Mary K. Greer, adds up your full birth date and reduces it until it points to one of the trumps. Most people receive two cards. The Personality card describes your outward path, the way you meet the world. The Soul card, a smaller number reached by reducing once more, speaks to the root lesson underneath, the quality you keep returning to over a lifetime.

Only the Major Arcana are used because there are 22 of them, and the method stops reducing as soon as the number is 22 or less, so every result lands on a trump. A birth tarot card calculator simply does the adding for you. Treat what you find as a mirror for reflection, not a verdict about fate: the cards describe themes to notice, not a script to follow.

How to Calculate Your Tarot Birth Card by Date of Birth

The calculator above works as a tarot birth card number calculator, but you can also find the tarot card for your birth date by hand in under a minute.

  1. Write your birth date as three numbers: the month, the day and the full year.
  2. Add them together as whole numbers, not digit by digit.
  3. Add the digits of that sum, repeating until the result is 22 or less. This number is your Personality card.
  4. Add the digits of the Personality number once more to determine your Soul card.

For someone born on April 15, 1990: 4 + 15 + 1990 = 2009. Then 2+0+0+9 = 11, which is Justice, the Personality card. Finally 1+1 = 2, which is The High Priestess, the Soul card.

  • If you reach 19, you hold three cards: The Sun (19), Wheel of Fortune (1+9 = 10) and The Magician (1+0 = 1).
  • If you reach 22, your cards are The Fool, numbered 22 here and 0 in the deck, and The Emperor (2+2 = 4).
  • If you reach a single digit, one card is both your Personality and your Soul card. It heads a family of trumps that reduce to the same digit, such as Death (13) and The Fool (22) for The Emperor.

Tarot Birth Card Combinations: All 13 Pairs

Every birth date leads to one of thirteen tarot birth card combinations, or to a single card that belongs to one of their families. Below, each pairing is read as a lifelong conversation: the higher card as your Personality, the lower card as your Soul.

Wheel of Fortune and The Magician Birth Cards

With Wheel of Fortune as your Personality card, your outward path tends to move in cycles: chance meetings, turning points and seasons that change before you feel ready. The Magician as your Soul card names the root lesson: you are not only carried by the wheel but can act with intention when it turns. The tension lies between trusting timing and taking charge. The gift is a rare sense of when to move, and the skill to make an opening count. A single-digit 1 belongs to this family too.

Wheel of Fortune The Magician

Justice and The High Priestess Birth Cards

Justice as a Personality card points to a life shaped by fairness, clear choices and honest weighing. The High Priestess as your Soul card turns that same search inward: the deepest lesson is to trust what you know quietly, before the evidence is in. The tension is between the scales and the veil, between what can be proven and what is simply sensed. The gift is judgment that includes intuition, a way of deciding that is both fair and wise. A single-digit 2 shares this family.

Justice The High Priestess

The Hanged Man and The Empress Birth Cards

The Hanged Man and Empress bring reframing together with nurture and creation. Suspension may open understanding; the Empress adds the actual conditions growth needs: time, attention and resources. This birth-card image establishes neither a personality trait nor future success.

The tension concerns patient nurture and sacrifice that leaves no room for enjoyment or receiving care. Patience can be fertile, but not every standstill is maturation. Consider what receives support and what remains unresolved, without requiring suffering to become a gift.

The Hanged Man The Empress

Death and The Emperor Birth Cards

If Death is your Personality card, transformation runs through your outward path: endings that clear space, chapters that close so another can begin. The Death tarot birth card speaks of change, not literal loss. The Emperor as your Soul card asks for structure, responsibility and steady ground. The tension sits between release and control, between letting go and building to last. The gift is the ability to rebuild with purpose after change. Anyone whose number reduces straight to 4 shares this Emperor family, as does The Fool.

Death The Emperor

Temperance and The Hierophant Birth Cards

People with tarot birth card 14 meet the world through Temperance: blending, balancing and finding the middle way between opposites. Their outward path often involves patience, healing or bringing different people together. The Hierophant as the Soul card points to a root lesson about meaning, tradition and passing on what you have learned. The tension is between flowing adaptation and inherited rules. The gift is a way of honouring what has been handed down while mixing it into something fresh and alive.

Temperance The Hierophant

The Devil and The Lovers Birth Cards

The Devil as a Personality card brings intensity to the outward path: desire, ambition and an honest look at what binds you, from habits to attachments. The Lovers as the Soul card turns the root lesson toward choice, values and real connection. The tension lies between attachment and freedom, between what pulls at you and what you consciously choose. The gift is a deep understanding of desire. Once you see your chains clearly, you can choose relationships and commitments that reflect who you actually are.

The Devil The Lovers

The Tower and The Chariot Birth Cards

With The Tower as your Personality card, your outward path may include sudden shifts, revelations and moments when false structures fall away. The Chariot as your Soul card offers the root lesson of direction: gathering yourself, steering through change and moving with purpose. The tension is between disruption and control, between what breaks open and the urge to hold the reins. The gift is resilience. You learn to keep moving through upheaval, and to use each breakthrough as fuel for a clearer course.

The Tower The Chariot

The Star and Strength Birth Cards

Tarot birth card 17 belongs to The Star, a Personality card of hope, renewal and quiet inspiration. Its outward path often involves offering others a sense of possibility after hard times. Strength as the Soul card holds the root lesson: courage that is gentle, patience with your own wilder impulses and a steady inner confidence. The tension is between openness and endurance. The gift is a hopeful resilience that heals as it goes. If your number reduces straight to 8, you belong to this Strength family as well.

The Star Strength

The Moon and The Hermit Birth Cards

The Moon as a Personality card shapes an outward path through dreams, imagination and uncertain ground, where intuition often has to stand in for a map. The Hermit as the Soul card names the root lesson: solitude, reflection and the search for inner truth. The tension is between confusion and clarity, between the fog of night and the light of the lantern. The gift is insight earned in the dark. You can guide others through ambiguity because you have learned to find your own way.

The Moon The Hermit

The Sun, Wheel of Fortune and The Magician Birth Cards

Nineteen is the only number that gives three birth cards, and The Sun leads them. This is a life lived in the open: visibility, vitality and a joy that other people can feel the moment you arrive. You tend to be noticed, and your warmth sets the tone around you. Underneath that light, Wheel of Fortune and The Magician work as the engine. The Wheel brings sudden openings, lucky breaks and changes of season. The Magician supplies the craft to act on them, so good fortune becomes something you make. The tension is between shining and building. The gift is bright energy with real skill behind it.

Judgement and The High Priestess Birth Cards

Judgement as a Personality card suggests an outward path of awakening and calling, moments when you hear a clear summons to rise into a fuller version of yourself. The High Priestess as the Soul card roots that call in inner knowing and the mysteries of the unseen. The tension is between a public answer and a private truth, between speaking out and keeping silent. The gift is a vocation guided by intuition. You recognise what matters when it calls, and you answer from a deep inner place.

Judgement The High Priestess

The World and The Empress Birth Cards

The World as your Personality card points to an outward path of completion, integration and wide horizons, a sense that life is meant to come full circle. The Empress as your Soul card roots this in nurture, beauty and creative abundance. The tension is between reaching for the whole and tending what is near and small. The gift is wholeness grown from care. You bring projects and people to fruition, and you know that every completed circle seeds the next one.

The World The Empress

The Fool and The Emperor Birth Cards

The Fool, numbered 22 in this method, gives a Personality card of beginnings, curiosity and leaps of faith. Your outward path may feel like a series of fresh starts, each one taken with an open heart. The Emperor as the Soul card names the root lesson of structure, authority and responsibility. The tension is between freedom and order, between the open road and the wish to build. The gift is pioneering leadership. You can begin bravely, then give your discoveries a lasting form that others can stand on.

The Fool The Emperor

Your Tarot Year Card

Your Year Card is a single Major Arcana card that sets a theme for one year of your life. It is calculated like your birth cards, with one change: instead of your birth year, you add your birth month, your birth day and the current year, then add the digits of the total until the number is 22 or less. Someone born on April 15 would work from April 15, 2026. Unlike your birth cards, which stay with you for life, the Year Card changes every year, so it works as a lens for the months ahead.

Tarot Birth Card FAQ

How do I calculate my tarot birth card?

Add your birth month, day and full year as whole numbers, then add the digits of the total until you reach 22 or less. That is your Personality card. Add its digits once more for your Soul card: April 15, 1990 gives 2009, then 11 (Justice), then 2 (The High Priestess).

What is my tarot birth card if my number is 22?

A result of 22 points to The Fool, numbered 0 in the deck but placed at 22 in this method as the card that completes the Major Arcana. Your Soul card is The Emperor, because 2 + 2 = 4: open-hearted beginnings paired with the wish to build something lasting.

Why do some people get three birth cards?

Three cards appear only when the reduced number is 19. The Sun is 19, its digits add to 10, Wheel of Fortune, and those add to 1, The Magician. Each step lands on a valid card, so all three are kept: a bright outward path, a feel for timing and a root lesson in skill.

Why do I only have one birth card?

If your total reduces straight to a single digit from 1 to 9, nothing is left to reduce, so one card is both your Personality and your Soul card. You also belong to its family, the higher trumps that reduce to the same digit, such as Strength with The Star.

Is my tarot birth card the same as my life path number?

Close, but not quite. Your Soul card’s number is always the same as your life path number — both come from reducing your full date of birth to one digit. The exception is a master number: if your life path is 11, 22 or 33, numerology keeps it, while your Soul card reduces it further (to 2, 4 or 6). Your Personality card is different: it stops at 22 or below, so it’s often a two-digit Major Arcana card that life path numerology doesn’t use.

Does the reversed meaning apply to a birth card?

No. Birth cards are read upright. They describe a lifelong pattern rather than a moment in a spread, so there is no reversed version of them. A card’s harder sides still belong to the picture, read as the tension within its upright meaning.

Can I use my birth card in a reading?

Yes. Many readers use a birth card as a significator, a card set aside to represent the person asking, or notice when it turns up in a spread as a sign that a question touches something central. You can also draw a card beside it and ask what it adds.

Can my birth card change?

No. Your birth cards come from your full birth date, so they stay the same for life. What changes is your Year Card, which uses your birth month and day with the current year and offers a fresh theme each year, read against your lasting pattern.
