Card Facts
5 = Gevurah · Pentacles = earth · Taurus = Fixed earth — so the decans of Taurus are the 5, 6 and 7 of Pentacles.
Golden Dawn title: The Lord of Material Trouble
Mercury in Taurus
Mercury is quick — it thinks, calculates, communicates, moves things along. Taurus is fixed earth: slow, material, heavy. The pairing is uncomfortable, and that is the point — knowing what needs doing arrives long before matter is ready to move. Hence the card's financial worry, the labour, the effort that has not yet borne fruit. And hence its opening: the Golden Dawn speaks here of loss of money or position, but also of money returned after hard work. The card does not say “you are poor”; it says that thought and matter are not moving at the same speed.
On the Tree of Life
5 · Gevurah
The limit: friction, contraction, judgement, the break that sets things moving.

How the card sits on the treeThe Five of Pentacles tarot card stands for hardship, exclusion and scarcity.
A period of tangible difficulty that can awaken loneliness. This card invites you to examine how this message is operating within money, the body, work and security. After the Four of Pentacles' attempt to hold security and the familiar, the Five shows that grip being unsettled: lack, vulnerability, exclusion or feeling left outside. This is tangible, existential pain associated with Earth, belonging and resources. Unlike the Three of Swords' cutting disappointment, the emphasis is living through hardship and its wearing effect; even if the crisis began suddenly, this is not a fixed duration forecast. The lit window raises questions about support and access to it, rather than proving help is available or blaming someone for failing to notice it. Shame and a scarcity mindset are possibilities alongside real barriers.
Message
The Five of Pentacles reflects hardship, worry, or the feeling of being outside a place of security and belonging. The difficulty is real, and it can narrow perception until it seems there is no way through at all. Do not carry the burden alone: reach toward a trusted person, community, or professional resource and ask for concrete support. Your worth is not determined by a temporary condition or by handling everything without assistance. Even in winter, a door, a small source of warmth, and a gradual path back to stability are worth looking for. Core qualities of Five of Pentacles: endurance, asking for help, perseverance, self-worth and facing hardship.
The light in the card
Recognizing difficulty as a temporary stage
The shadow in the card
A feeling of abandonment, and scarcity that starts to be read as an identity rather than a condition
Psychological layer
Real material hardship, and the shame that travels with it. Three separate things tend to blur together here: that there is no help, that I cannot see it, and that it is not meant for me. In a health-related question, the card can reflect the person's experience: disappointment, insecurity, a gap between wishes and capacity, or impact on daily life, only where they recognize that experience. Ask openly which changes or sensations are affecting everyday life. Do not infer illness, menopause or a symptom from the pictured heart or crutches, or lead someone toward chest pain because a heart is depicted. Feeling 'let down by my body' is an optional metaphor the reader can accept or reject, not a physical finding or a claim that thoughts caused the condition.
Personal growth
To ask — without knowing in advance whether there will be an answer
Love & relationships
In Pentacles, relationship is tested through stability, reliability, embodiment, home, time, and resources — the things through which love takes everyday form. The Five of Pentacles in love can describe financial pressure, loneliness, illness in the family, or the feeling that one person is unsupported. Hardship can create closeness when help is sought together, or distance when shame drives each person inward. The number 5 disrupts equilibrium and makes the relationship meet pain, difference, or competition. The aim is not to avoid all friction but to understand what it reveals. Pentacles ask whether the bond merely talks about security or actually builds routine, reciprocity, and a life that can be inhabited.
Career
At work, Pentacles emphasize professionalism, money, craft, results, routine, the body, and the ability to build something durable. At work, it marks scarcity, insecurity, unemployment, reduced income, or exclusion. The message is not to pretend hardship is unreal, but not to remain alone with it: examine resources, rights, community, and practical options. The number 5 brings a test, discomfort, or changing conditions; it exposes where the system is weak and what requires a new response. The measure is not only speed of advancement, but whether the path develops value, skill, and security that can still be trusted later. In workplace communication, the Five of Pentacles may reflect feeling excluded, unrecognized, unsupported or unable to use one's skills while still employed. This does not establish that a manager favors others or distrusts the querent. Even in a yes/no answer position, consider whether it describes the difficulty behind the question, a possible cost or an obstacle; the card alone does not justify advising silence or avoiding support. Possible questions: In which concrete situations are trust, belonging or responsibility missing? What support or autonomy is needed? Is a transfer motivated by interest in the new role, difficulty in the current setting, or both? If the question combines requesting a transfer and expressing feelings, distinguish the actions before drawing a conclusion. Seeking help does not guarantee a response.
Money & security
A gap between available resources and essential expenses can weigh on a purchase, on an existing payment or on the ability to take on another commitment. The card draws attention to basic needs, to income that has been hit and to the cost of coping without enough support. It is worth examining what help actually exists and what makes it hard to reach, without assuming the solution is near or accessible. Its appearance does not prove debt, loss of income or insolvency.
Family
Within family life, this card brings forward the theme of a period of tangible difficulty that can awaken loneliness, and invites awareness of roles, needs and patterns within the household.
Spirituality
Distinguishing a condition of scarcity from identity and self-worth, allowing a need for support without assuming help is available or hardship results from a lack of faith.
Mythic parallel
Demeter in the winter of Persephone's absence parallels the Five of Pentacles: the earth stops yielding when grief and scarcity dominate. Yet the story also contains negotiation, help, and the return of seasons. The card reminds us that scarcity is a difficult condition, not an eternal identity. This is an interpretive parallel intended to deepen the reading, not a claim that the myth is a fixed historical source of the card.
Connections with other cards
Possible readings depend on the question and the cards' actual positions.
| Card | Possible connection |
|---|---|
| Knight of Cups | Feeling meets a need for tangible support; infer no unreported financial hardship. |
| Wheel of Fortune | Consider support during material change; hardship, exclusion or dependence on circumstances do not justify blaming the affected person. |
| Justice | Examine access to support and the fairness of a framework. Exclusion or blaming someone for hardship may need recognition. Interpret through the question and both fixed positions; co-occurrence is not a chronology or evidence of an event. |
| The Tower | Material vulnerability or a feeling of lacking support. |
| The Star | With the Star, after the winter there is room for hope and gradual healing. Emphasis: hope does not cancel the cold or the real hardship; it is a reminder that scarcity is a condition, not an identity. |
| The Sun | Support and warmth within scarcity; financial difficulty remains real and aid is not guaranteed. |
| The Lovers | A bond amid practical hardship or exclusion; support and belonging without establishing illness or abandonment. |
| Queen of Pentacles | With the Five of Pentacles, tangible support can ease a stated sense of lack or difficulty. Wishing to offer security does not guarantee resources, and the pair establishes neither deprivation nor abandonment. |
| Four of Pentacles | With the Five of Pentacles, the fear of winter stands beside the grip: what is held tight may be held because scarcity feels close. Emphasis: separating a real need for protection from a fear that keeps the body tight even when there is no immediate danger. With the Four of Pentacles, the grip and the scarcity stand side by side: the fear of losing and the experience of lack. Emphasis: what truly needs protecting now, and what is held out of a fear that narrows the view even further. |
| Six of Pentacles | With the Six of Pentacles, the spread shows what the Five is looking for: an outstretched hand, giving and receiving. Emphasis: asking for and accepting help without shame and at eye level, without promising that help is already on its way. With the Five of Pentacles, the outstretched hand meets those walking through the snow. Emphasis: help given and received with dignity and at eye level, not the kind that leaves the receiver on their knees. |
| Three of Swords | Together the Three of Swords and Five of Pentacles can describe disappointment or separation that also unsettles security, resources and belonging. Distinguish the moment of hurt from the resulting circumstances; do not invent a breakup or material hardship without context. |
Moment for reflection: Sit quietly and ask: What step today expresses the message “A period of tangible difficulty that can awaken loneliness”?

Waite, Smith and the modern reading
Waite describes two beggars passing through a snowstorm beside a lighted window, and says the card signifies material trouble above all. Smith added what makes it more complicated: the stained-glass window above them, and in it five pentacles — the symbol of the thing they lack, directly over their heads.
Many tarot books read this as “they pass a church and do not notice that help is right beside them.” It is a good reading of the picture, but Waite himself does not say the church is open to them, or that the help is available to them. He describes them passing a lighted window.
The light is close. The picture does not tell us whether they cannot see it, cannot enter it, or do not believe it is meant for them — and that question is left open on purpose.
