Why this spread
Sometimes the question is not "what is happening" but "how did I get here". The time axis shows the situation as movement: what led to it, where it is now, and where it heads if the dynamic continues. The simplest spread, and the one in which change is easiest to spot.
What sets it apart
If the situation itself matters more than the time axis, the 3-Card Reading is usually more precise.
